Braces are fantastic at straightening teeth, but they’re also incredibly good at trapping food. Brackets & wires create countless tiny hiding spots where plaque & bacteria love to settle. Without a solid cleaning routine, those leftovers can lead to cavities, irritated gums, bad breath & even white spots on your teeth that may still be visible after your braces come off.
However, keeping your smile healthy doesn’t require fancy tricks—just a little extra attention & consistency. Once you get the hang of it, caring for braces becomes second nature—& your teeth will thank you when those brackets finally come off.
Don’t Skip the Floss!
Flossing with braces takes a little more effort, but it’s one of the most important steps in your routine. Toothbrush bristles simply can’t reach between your teeth, where plaque & food particles love to linger.
Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to guide the floss underneath the archwire before gently cleaning between each tooth & just below the gumline. If traditional floss feels too challenging, your orthodontist may also recommend an interdental cleaner or water flosser to help clean around brackets & between teeth.
The goal is to clean every space your toothbrush can’t reach. It may take a few extra minutes, but your gums—and your future brace-free smile—will appreciate the effort.
Rinse, Then Brush
Before you even reach for your toothbrush, rinse your mouth with water. This simple step helps loosen food particles hiding around brackets & wires, making brushing more effective from the start.
Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush & use fluoride toothpaste. Brush for a full two minutes, twice a day at minimum & ideally after meals when possible.
Instead of brushing straight across your braces, angle the toothbrush toward the gumline at roughly 45 degrees. Gently clean above the brackets, then angle downward to brush below them. Finish by brushing the chewing surfaces & the backs of your teeth. Every bracket should look clean & shiny before you’re done.
Finish Strong
Once you’ve brushed & flossed, rinse thoroughly to wash away any loosened debris. Check your braces in the mirror—your brackets should look clean & free of food particles. If your orthodontist recommends it, a fluoride mouth rinse can provide an extra layer of protection against cavities.
Finally, keep up with your regular dental cleanings & orthodontic appointments. Professional care helps catch small issues before they become bigger problems, keeping your treatment on track & your smile healthy from start to finish.
