Dental Crowns in Southeast Portland, OR − Portland OR
Protect and strengthen cracked, heavily filled, or root-canal-treated teeth with custom-crafted Katana™ and Multi-Layered Zirconia crowns—with most back-tooth crowns designed, made, and permanently bonded in a single procedure visit.

“Not every tooth needs the exact same type of crown. For molars that absorb heavy chewing forces, we mill ultra-strong Katana and multi-layered MTL zirconia right here in our office so you leave with your permanent tooth the same day. For highly visible front teeth, we take custom clinical shade photography and partner with master ceramists so the translucency matches your neighboring enamel down to the smallest detail.”
When Does a Tooth Need a Dental Crown Instead of a Filling?
While a tooth-colored composite filling is ideal when a cavity is small and surrounded by thick natural enamel, placing a wide filling inside a structurally weakened tooth can act like a wedge under chewing pressure. Our doctors recommend a full-coverage crown in four clinical situations:
1. Structural Tooth Cracks (Often 100% Painless)
Most structural cracks in back teeth cause zero chewing pain or cold sensitivity right up until a cusp suddenly fractures—and often even after it breaks. We use high-resolution intraoral cameras during your exam so you can see fracture lines early, wrapping the tooth 360° before the crack splits into the nerve or root.
2. Oversized Fillings (Preventing Cusp Fracture)
Even when an existing filling is not actively decaying or failing, its sheer size can dictate the need for a crown. When a wide filling spans more than 50%–60% of the width of a molar, the remaining thin outer enamel walls are left unsupported and prone to snapping under everyday biting forces.
3. Protecting a Tooth After a Root Canal
Root canal therapy saves an infected or abscessed tooth, but leaves the remaining shell of the tooth hollowed out and more brittle. Encapsulating the tooth with a custom zirconia crown restores its full chewing strength.
4. Dental Implants, Bridges & Work Injuries
Custom crowns serve as the permanent replacement tooth atop a single-site dental implant, support a fixed dental bridge, or rebuild teeth chipped or broken in a workplace accident.
How We Tailor Your Crown Material & Workflow to Each Tooth
Posterior Crowns & Short-Span Bridges
Materials: Katana™ Zirconia & MTL (Multi-Translucency Layered) Zirconia.
Combines exceptional flexural strength for heavy molar chewing with natural tooth-colored shading that transitions smoothly from the gumline to the biting edge—never leaving a dark metal line like old porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) caps.
Your Visit: Scanned with Primescan 3D, milled in-house on our Primemill unit, and permanently bonded in a single visit. Explore Same-Day CEREC® Crowns →
Anterior (Front Tooth) Aesthetic Crowns
Materials: Custom-layered Ceramic & High-Translucency Aesthetic Zirconia.
Front teeth catch direct sunlight and feature subtle surface texture, character, and translucency gradients that require individualized artistic layering.
Your Visit: We capture 3D digital scans plus high-resolution clinical shade-matching photographs under calibrated lighting so our master ceramist matches your adjacent front teeth seamlessly.
Longer-Span Dental Bridges
Materials: Multi-unit lab Zirconia with in-house 3D-milled provisional protection.
Longer-span bridges replacing multiple missing teeth require specialized lab framework sintering for long-span bite distribution.
Your Visit: Instead of a rough hand-molded plastic temporary that feels bulky or pops off, we digitally scan and 3D-mill your custom temporary bridge right in our office for a smooth, secure fit while your final dental bridge is crafted.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns
Why did older dental websites say zirconia crowns don’t look natural?
First-generation monolithic zirconia from 15 years ago was opaque and chalky white. Today, we use advanced Katana™ and MTL (Multi-Translucency Layered) Zirconia, which features built-in enamel-like translucency at the biting edge and rich dentin warmth near the gumline—giving you both the highest fracture resistance in dentistry and a natural, lifelike appearance.
How do you decide between a same-day in-house crown and a lab-crafted crown?
Almost all back teeth (molars and premolars) and short-span posterior bridges are ideal candidates for our in-house Same-Day CEREC® Crowns, letting you finish in one appointment with zero temporary crown. For front teeth in the aesthetic smile zone or longer-span bridges, we take custom clinical shade photographs and partner with a master dental lab—and for longer bridges, we still 3D-mill your temporary in-house so it fits with digital precision.
Does getting a dental crown hurt, and what sedation options do you offer?
No. Your doctor thoroughly numbs the tooth with gentle local anesthesia before any preparation begins, and because we use a handheld 3D optical camera instead of putty trays, there is zero gagging. If you experience dental anxiety, we also offer both Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and Oral Conscious Sedation (a prescribed pill taken before your visit with a companion driver).
How long does a zirconia or ceramic crown last?
With daily brushing, flossing along the gumline margin, and routine six-month checkups, modern Katana/MTL zirconia and ceramic crowns routinely last 15 to 25+ years. If you clench or grind your teeth at night, we can also take a quick 3D scan for a custom nightguard to protect your new crown while you sleep.
Does dental insurance cover same-day crowns the same as two-visit crowns?
Yes! Insurance plans use the exact same ADA procedure code for a permanent ceramic/zirconia crown whether it is milled in-house in one visit or made in an outside lab over two weeks. There is no extra fee for our same-day CEREC technology.
Does Oregon Workers’ Compensation cover a dental crown if my tooth was cracked or broken at work?
Yes! Under Oregon workers’ compensation law, you have the right to choose your own dentist for any on-the-job dental injury. As an experienced Oregon Workers’ Comp dental provider, we get you in quickly to relieve pain, restore your injured tooth with a custom zirconia or ceramic crown, and handle all diagnostic records, Form 827 support, and direct billing with SAIF, Sedgwick, Travelers, and all workplace insurers—resulting in $0 out-of-pocket cost (no copays or deductibles) for approved workplace dental claims.
Can I schedule my crown appointment before or after work, or come in on a Saturday?
We offer extended weekday hours—including early mornings from 7:00 AM and late evenings Monday through Thursday until 7:00 PM—specifically so you can get your same-day crown or restorative work completed without missing work. On Saturdays, our doctors and hygiene team focus primarily on routine 6-month teeth cleanings and checkup exams so families in our community can stay on top of preventive care without taking time off work or pulling kids out of school. If a dental emergency happens on a Saturday, we also take and triage urgent dental emergencies and provide simple palliative care to get you out of pain right away, then schedule your permanent crown during our convenient weekday hours.
